Theyll divide that money by the number of kids in the program in those counties, said Peggy Simpson, director of Wilson Books from Birth.

The foundation was started in 2004 by former Gov. Phil Bredesen and provides books free-of-charge to children across the state. The Wilson County chapter, founded in 2005, has 4,400 kids active in the program.

Simpson said the organization spends $30 per child each year on books and the number of children in the county eligible to receive books is growing. She said the 2010 U.S. Census showed that the number of children age 5 and under in Wilson County has grown by 21 percent.

We operate on a budget of $50,000 a year, and every dollar we get goes to the books, Simpson said. Most of our funds are raised right here in Wilson County and weve had really good support from the community.

Simpson said the donation from Amazon will help the local chapter in purchasing books for next year.
