I believe this survey to be accurate. Our circulation at The Wilson Post has grown each year and I think there is a valid reason for this growth.
Our newspaper and others like it are focusing strictly on local news. We don’t carry news service content such as the Associated Press and we tend to not talk about or report on national news events.
We believe our readers want our newspaper to provide local news. In other words, the news they can’t get from Katie Couric on the 5:30 network broadcast or find on the Internet.
We report happenings involving local government, Little League baseball scores, high school sports, area businesses, local health and medical news, and feature local photos with local folks.
For our newspaper to continue to be successful and to continue to build readership, we believe our focus must continue to be on local news. Andy Rooney is usually right. But this time he was perhaps only half right. Only the daily newspapers are losing readership.
