PASCAGOULA, MS -- The big weekend is finally here, as the 2008 Dixie Youth O-Zone World Series gets under way with opening ceremonies and a home run derby earlier Friday and competition following on Saturday at Gibson and Flanagan fields.
"At this point we're all waiting on that first pitch to be thrown because we know when that happens, most of the hard work will be finished," said Pascagoula Youth president Eric Hartman.
Pascagoula was awarded the O-Zone World Series last year after the 2007 tournament was held in Virginia. The city's World Series Committee has worked for a year getting everything lined up, from sponsorships to field maintenance to securing hotel rooms for all of the participants and coaches.
"We've had a great group of folks working on this committee and it proves our community thrives on opportunities like these," said committee co-chairman Frank Corder. "We'll have 11 states visiting our city this weekend, so if you're including the hotel rooms, it will be an economic benefit for the entire Jackson County community."
