Obituaries

Athelyne Woodard West, 103
CARTHAGE -- Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon, February 10 at the Sanderson Funeral Home for Mrs. West, 103, of the Turkey Creek Community.
A well-known antique dealer for over 50 years, she died Tuesday, Feb. 8. 2011 at her residence.
Born in Smith County, Mrs. West was one of six children born to the late Robert Lee Woodard and Holla Delora Massey Woodard.
Saved at the age of 14 and a member of the Cornwell’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, she faithfully attended the North Carthage Missionary Baptist Church until her heath failed.
Mrs. West was a member of the Turkey Creek Home Demonstration Club for many years. She owned and operated West Grocery for 18 years and also was a partner with her brother in the laundromat business in Carthage.
Services were conducted by Elder Charles Allen Gentry and Elder Kenneth Massey. Interment was in the Ridgewood Cemetery in Carthage.
Survivors include: son Billy Robert West; granddaughter Pam (Mark) Andrews; grandson Bob (Jennie) West; great-grandchildren Hailey West, Scarlett, Brent and Chelsea Andrews; foster daughter Mattie Hirst.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by husband Hugh Cordell West, sister Mary Katherine Kemp; and brothers Virgil, E.B., Cecil and Carl Woodard.
Pallbearers: Richard, Oliver and Brent Woodard, Billy D. Kemp, Freddie Armistead, Jimmy Hayes, Lee Pettross, Hughey Gregory, Bob and Bud West.
Ligon & Bobo Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

James W. Simmons, Jr., 76,
MT. JULIET -- Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12 at Victory Baptist Church, 1777 Tate Lane, for Mr. Simmons, Jr., 76, of Mt. Juliet.
A nearly 50-year employee of the State of Tennessee, Mr. Simmons died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011.
For just over 30 years Mr. Simmons worked as Executive Secretary to the Secretary of State, serving under the late Gentry Crowell, Bryant Millsaps, Riley Darnell and Trey Hargett until he retired in December of 2009.
Mr. Simmons was honored by former Governor Ned Ray McWherter who appointed him Secretary of State to serve during the disability of Secretary Crowell.
A native of Van Buren County, he was a member of the Baptist church, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of American Legion Post #88.
Mr. Simmons was a graduate of Van Buren County High School and obtained a B.S. in 1960 and a M.A. in 1978 from Tennessee Technological University.
He started his career in Tennessee State Government in 1960 as a Junior Auditor with the Department of Finance and Administration rising to the position of Assistant Commissioner for Accounting and Data Processing before joining the staff of Dr. Everett Derryberry, President of Tennessee Technological University.
In 1975, he was promoted to Director for Business and Finance where he served for a number of years before being promoted as Executive Assistant to the Tennessee Secretary of State in 1979. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Friday at Bond Memorial Chapel and one hour prior to service time Saturday at the church.
Services will be conducted by Rev. Dave West. Interment with military honors will follow at Mt. Juliet Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include: wife Georgette Marie Pearson Simmons and children Jade (Casey) Bowman of Mt. Juliet; Keith (Raye Ann) Simmons of Cookeville; Julie (Tim) Sherrill and Jeanne (John) Collard -- all of Murfreesboro; Jay (Ann) of Colorado Springs, CO and Joseph (Jackie) of Woodbury.
Also surviving is sister Emogene (Charles W.) Hodges of McMinnville as well as other devoted family members and friends.
He was the son of the late, James W. “Jay” and Eliza E. Hillis Simmons.
Mr. Simmons was also preceded in death by siblings Sylvia Malugen, Hazel Chandler, Lemojewel Jones, Reba Gladden, Anna Lou Haston, Richard “Dick” Simmons and Thomas “Tommy” Simmons.
Active pallbearers: Brooks Crowell, Mark Wood, Richard Arnold, Bard Fisher, John Cheney and James Hall. Honorary: will be the Honorable Trey Hargett, the Honorable Riley C. Darnell, the Honorable Bryant Millsaps, Jim Vaden, Rev. Marshall Gupton, Margaret Tolleson and employees of the Tennessee Department of State.

Robert W. "Buddy" Maddox, 67
Memorial services have been scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Partlow Funeral Chapel for Robert W. “Buddy” Maddox, 67, of Lebanon.
Son of the late Lebanon Mayor Willis H. “Tex” and Eugenia Freeman Maddox, he died Wednesday Feb. 9, 2011 at the Summit Medical Center.
The tennis courts in Lebanon’s Baird Park Complex were named in Buddy’s memory.
Mr. Maddox was a member of the College Hills Church of Christ and had been employed with Prospect Inc.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, from 9:30 a.m. until the service.
Dr. Larry Locke will officiate the service.
Survivors include: sister Ann (Don) Stenhouse of Suwanee, GA; nieces Jennifer Stenhouse of Seattle, WA and Leslie (Jeff) Parker of Atlanta, GA; great nieces and nephews Sydney, Nolan and Justin Parker as well as loving family and friends in Texas.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in the memory of Buddy Maddox to Prospect Inc., 960 Maddox Simpson Parkway, Lebanon, 37087.

Virginia Mary Morgan Peterson, 86
MT. JULIET - Memorial services will be held in New Mexico at a later date for Mrs. Peterson, 86, of Mt. Juliet.
A loving wife, mother and sister, Mrs. Peterson died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011.
She attended Covenant Fellowship Church of the Nazarene in Mt. Juliet.
Survivors include: husband of 66 years Danny Peterson of Mt. Juliet; children Danny (Linda) Peterson, Jr. of Naselle, WA; James Randall Peterson of Thailand and Jennie Peterson of Honolulu, HI.
Also surviving are siblings Dr. Jacob Morgan of Oceanside, CA and Anna Ruth Starnes of Lynchburg, VA; grandchildren Michelle Johnson and Jeffery Jackson; great-grandchildren Derrick, Coy and Chase
She was preceded in death by son Carl Peterson and daughter Shirley Jackson.
