SHACKLE ISLAND – Beech took control of the Region 6, 4A championship race with a one-sided 54-38 victory Friday night over Mt. Juliet.
The Bucs improved to 7-1 overall and more importantly, a perfect 5-0 in the league with just a game Oct. 24 at Clarksville Northwest and a home game Oct. 31 with Portland left on the schedule.
Mt. Juliet suffered its first regional loss of the year, falling to 4-1 in the league / 4-4 overall.
Leading 14-7 after one quarter, Beech took control with three second period touchdowns and held a commanding 34-10 lead at intermission.
Mt. Juliet made the game interesting with three fourth quarter touchdowns, but the damage had been done.
The Bucs controlled the ground game, rushing for 384 yards on 53 plays – an average of 7.24 yards per attempts. Senior backs Bobby Huey (20 carries for 164 yards. two scores) and Justin Allen (13 carries for 129, 1 TD) did most of the heavy lifting as the Bucs ground out 17 first downs.
Mt. Juliet finished with 19 first downs and 199 yards rushing on 29 attempts. Brady Earnhardt rushed 19 times for 91 yards, including a 52 yard first quarter burst.
Junior quarterback Reed Gurchiek completed 14-of-20 pass attempts for 212 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also ran 12 times for 91 yards. Soph Vaughn Cornelia caught five passes for 132 yards and a score while Danny Valencic caught four passes for 45 yards.
Mt. Juliet closes out the regular season with back-to-back home games with Clarksville, Oct. 24 and Clarksville Northwest Oct. 31.
