Bulldogs off to fast 7-0 start

MAYFIELD, Ky. -- Coach Lonnie Thompson’s Cumberland Bulldogs improved to 7-0 to start the season following a 87-66 win over Mid-Continent Tuesday at the Mayfield High School Sports Arena. CU stands 7-0 for the first time since the 2000-2001 season.
Senior guard Lester Gude scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed six rebounds for the winners.
The Bulldogs controlled the contest for the entirety of the first half, leading by as many as 24 points with 2:31 remaining in the period.
Already leading by 15 with just over five and a half minutes left, CU used an 11-2 run over a three minute span to put the contest out of reach. The Bulldogs exited the first stanza leading by 19.
Mid-Continent opened the second half scoring 16 of the first 22 points to bring the score within 10 with 15 minutes to play, but Cumberland found a rhythm from there on out, extending the lead to as much as 19 and holding at leads a 14-point advantage for the rest of the contest.
Four Bulldogs scored in double figures as DeQuan Bond added 15, E.J. Perry scored 10 and, in his first game of the season after a wrist injury, Lamar Brinkley tacked on 12.
Junior Moritz Dern brought down a team-high eight caroms while scoring seven points. The Bulldog offense featured 11 different scorers on the stat sheet, and each grabbed at least one rebound.
Cumberland shot 53 percent from the field in the contest while holding the Cougars to under 40 percent and forcing 23 turnovers.
CU travels to Cleveland, MS Saturday for a 4 p.m. exhibition against NCAA Division II Delta State.
