Halloween on the Square is no longer just a simple festival for Lebanon families on the downtown Lebanon Public Square.

Crystal Couture Owner Helene Cash said the event, organized by the Lebanon/Wilson Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with sponsors such as the City of Lebanon, local businesses and churches, has become “iconic” for the city.

“We have about 5,000 people that attend. We are community oriented and there is no better opportunity to have families down on the square. I love it,” she noted.

Cash has participated along with other business owners in handing out candy to children for the past three years – and last year entered in the Coffin Race.

“I can’t tell you how much fun it is,” she said. “The candy is donated to the chamber, as well as business owners buying candy. We do a lot on our own. The chamber does an amazing job in putting this event together.”

This year’s Halloween on the Square is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 5 to 8 p.m. “It has really grown,” said Lebanon/Wilson Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Sue Vanatta. “Each year we add something new and different.”

Lebanon Police Chief Scott Bowen said that LPD and Public Safety will do their best to ensure that all of the trick-or-treaters present at Halloween on the Square, have a safe, enjoyable experience.

“We will have somebody handing out candy and taking care of the traffic issues. It seems like it gets bigger and bigger every year, but we will have plenty of staff there,” he said.

He advised parents to use proper precautions on Halloween, if they choose to trick-or-treat in neighborhoods.

“Our main fear is traffic safety in these neighborhoods. Parents should make sure their children, especially if they are not in a well-lit neighborhood, have a flashlight or wear reflective clothing. Also, any candy that would not be sealed or closed – take precautions,”

Bowen continued, before reassuring the public that other than “mischievous stuff like toilet papering yards, we normally don’t have that much problem.”
