FLORENCE, AL -- Shawn Schaefer tossed five strong innings and David Fanshawe and Max Kautz both hit home runs, leading Cumberland to a 12-6 victory over Division II North Alabama Wednesday in the Bulldogs season opener.

Fanshawe ended the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a solo homer, while Kautz collected two hits and two RBIs and scored three times. He also extended his hitting steak to 14 games, carrying over from last season.

Cumberland scored 12 runs on just nine hits, taking advantage of seven walks, two hit batsmen and a pair of errors by the Lions. Newcomer Troy Frazier walked twice and scored a pair of runs for CU, and Matt Greener drove in two runs.

Schaefer (1-0) cruised through most of the first five innings, retiring the side in order in three frames and facing just three batters over the minimum total. But the Lions chased the lefthander in the sixth on three hits and the aid of an error. Nevertheless Schaefer posted the victory, allowing four runs on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Aaron Wilkerson got the final out of the sixth and Wilkerson, Adam Sprague and Daniel Kern worked the last three innings for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the first and single runs in the second and third.

Kautz led off the game with a single to left, Sam Kikla was hit and Frazier walked to load the bases before Kris Miller's fielder's choice plated a run and left runners on the corners.

Fanshawe reached on an infield single to load the bases again and Greener plated a run with a sacrifice fly.

In the second, Kautz walked with two outs and stole second. Kikla then reached on an error by rightfielder Jacob Lamar, allowing Kautz to score for a 3-0 lead.

UNA got a run back in the bottom of the inning after a leadoff double from Josh Cyr. Jared Mothershed's two-out singe to left scored Cyr, cutting the Bulldog lead to 3-1.

Fanshawe belted the first home run of the season for CU in the third, a solo shot, for a 4-1 Cumberland advantage.

The Bulldogs added to the lead in the fifth with three more runs. Kikla and Frazier both walked and moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Miller plated both runners with a single and then moved to third on a single from Fanshawe. Miller later scored on a groundout from Greener for a 7-1 CU lead.

Kautz added a solo homer to leadoff the sixth to extend the edge to 8-1 for the Bulldogs.

In the UNA sixth Lamar led off with a single and Nick McGregor reached on an error by second baseman Dave Weyer. A single from Chris Porch loaded the bases before a two-run double down the leftfield line by Cyr. Andrew Almon's groundout plated another run and with two outs, Wilkerson came on to get the final out of the inning, a fly out from Mothershed.

The Bulldogs came right back though, loading the bases to start the seventh with walks to Fanshawe and Derrick Harwood and a single from Greener. Weyer delivered a two-run single to right and Kautz's sacrifice fly plated another run for an 11-4 lead for CU.

In the eighth Frazier was hit and moved to third on an error by Blake Stroth. Greener's sacrifice fly to right plated Frazier for CU's final run.

Cumberland hosts Iowa Wesleyan and the Univ. of St. Francis this weekend at Ernest L. Stockton Field starting Saturday at Noon.
