CU BASKETBALL -- Cowan honored by TSWA

Cassie Cowan

Cumberland University’s Casie Cowan garnered Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors from the Tennessee Sports Writers Association on Tuesday, averaging 23.0 points in a pair of contests for the Bulldogs.

The Seymour native netted 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting along with six assists while playing all 40 minutes in a 75-62 victory over St. Catharine College.

Two days later the senior guard kept her team in the game against No. 7 Campbellsville University, tying a career-high with six 3-pointers and making 9-of-13 shots total in the contest. Cowan finished with 28 points and four rebounds versus the Tigers in a 70-66 loss and is now averaging 23.8 points in CU's four conference outings this season.

She is shooting 49 percent (25-of-51) from 3-point range over the last eight games, scoring in double figures in all eight outings while averaging 18.8 points per contest.

Cumberland, ranked 22nd nationally and 7-5 overall, heads to Bluefield College Thursday and the University of Pikeville Saturday for Mid-South Conference action this weekend.

Casie Cowan hit six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 28 points, but No. 7 Campbellsville put together a 13-1 spurt in the second half en route to a 70-66 victory over 22nd-ranked Cumberland Saturday in women’s basketball action at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.

The Bulldogs (7-5, 3-1 Mid-South) and Tigers were neck-and-neck for much of the contest until a three-minute stretch midway through the second period. Lindsey Burd started the run with a jumper and a layup and ended the spurt with another bucket, giving Campbellsville (13-1, 4-0) a 57-44 advantage with 8:10 remaining in the game. CU committed three turnovers and missed a pair of shots during the Tigers run.

Cumberland battled valiantly over the final minutes, cutting the deficit to four thanks to a pair of trifectas from Cowan and a 3-pointer by Layce Colter, who also assisted on a layup by Katie Smith to make it 64-60 with 1:58 remaining.

That was as close as CU would get, as Burd and Daizah Kimberland each made both foul shots in the 1-and-1 over the final 42 seconds. The Bulldogs had to foul three times in the final minute to put the Tigers in the bonus.

Cowan connected on 6-of-8 from behind the arc and 9-of-13 shots overall for her seventh career 20-plus point effort. Smith added 15 points and TaCouya Allen posted 10 points and 10 rebounds, her first double-double of the season and third straight contest with double-figure boards.

Lamar Brinkley hit a pair of free throws with 18.9 seconds to give Cumberland a 68-67 lead, but a Campbellsville layup with four seconds on the clock would prove to be the difference as the Tigers won 69-68 Saturday at the Floyd Center. The loss was the third in a row for the Bulldogs, who opened the season 10-0.

Cumberland (2-2 MSC) took their first lead of the second half with just two minutes remaining as freshman Marquel Hickerson connected from the right wing for a triple set up by a high screen from Brinkley.

The bucket gave Cumberland a 64-63 lead, after battling back from an eight point deficit.
Hickerson led the way for the Bulldogs with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting and 5-of-9 from behind the arc.

Junior Josh Wilkerson and Brinkley each notched double-figure scoring, both with 11.

Cumberland struggled on the glass in the opening half, allowing the Tigers to pull down seven offensive rebounds in the period. Campbellsville (6-6, 1-3 MSC) turned that into 12 second chance points compared to the Bulldogs’ four.
