Cumberland's baseball team returns to action Saturday and Sunday with a three-game series at Ernest L. Stockton Field against TranSouth Conference rival Lyon College.
Saturday's doubleheader begins at 12 Noon followed by a single nine-inning game Sunday at 1 p.m. Cumberland's out-of-town fans cankeep up withall the action online at www.gocumberlandathletics.com.
CU (12-9) finished up a production five-game trip to Florida earlier this week with a pair of wins Wednesday in Daytona Beach.
Cumberland scored eight runs in the first four innings and Lebanon lefty Cody Ferrell worked into the seventh inning in an 8-3 win Wednesday night over No. 5 Embry-Riddle.
Earlier Wednesday, the Bulldogs defeated Aquinas College, 2-1 behind a strong performance from Mitch Rainer.
"We had a couple of really good pitching performances by Cody and Mitch Wednesday," said Cumberland coach Woody Hunt. "our offense came alive a little. We'll need to keep it up with a big conference weekend coming up."
The Bulldogs pounded out 12 hits in the first four innings against Embry-Riddle (17-6).
Ferrell (2-1) worked into the seventh and did not allow a hit until the sixth. He was effectively wild, walking four, hitting two batters and throwing two wild pitches, .
Earlier Wednesday, Rainer (1-0) tossed six shutout innings and Keith Kirby recorded the final two outs in a 2-1 victory over Aquinas College (2-4). Rainer allowed just two hits through six innings before running into trouble in the seventh. He walked one and struck out four in his first start of the season.
