LEBANON -- Cumberland University junior Brandon Springer has been voted First Team All-TranSouth and senior Rontreal Braxton earned second team honors in a poll of league basketball coaches released Tuesday.Coach Lonnie Thompson's Bulldogs tied for second in the TSAC this season with a 13-3 league record and are currently ranked 15th nationally in the NAIA Coaches Top 25.
Springer is Cumberland’s leading scorer at 13.6 points per game on a squad that has six players averaging better than 9.2 points per contest. The Nashville native shoots 59 percent from the field and 74 percent at the foul line.
He has 21 double-figure scoring games this season in 28 contests, including five 20-point outings. His scoring average in TranSouth Conference games is slightly higher at 14.0 per game, with four of his five 20-point contests in league play.
He scored a season-high 28 points against Martin Methodist on February 16, netted 23 against Bethel College on January 19 and posted 20 points against Freed-Hardeman on December 6.Springer also ranks first on the squad in rebounding with 6.8 per game and is first in steals with 2.0 per contest. He ranks 33rd nationally in steals per game and 48th in defensive rebounds with 5.1.
Braxton ranks third on the club in scoring, averaging 10.5 points per game, while grabbing 3.9 rebounds and handing out 1.8 assists per contest.
The Hopkinsville, Ky., native was the team’s most consistent performer in January, netting 15 or more points in six of eight league games, including 19 points at Union and 21 at Trevecca. His scoring average in TranSouth games is 12.2 per outing.
Braxton has 14 double-figure scoring games this season, including a season-high 23 points at Lambuth two weeks ago.
Cumberland will host rival Trevecca in the quarterfinals of the TranSouth Championships Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
LADY BULLDOG HONORED -- Cumberland senior Chaquaila Gaten was voted second team All-TranSouth Monday. Gaten is the Lady Bulldogs leading scorer, averaging 12.9 points per game along with 4.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists per contest.
The Marietta, Ga., native has scored in double figures 21 times in 29 games this season, including four 20-point outings.
Cumberland plays at Freed-Hardeman Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the TranSouth Championships.
