WATERTOWN -- Funeral services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, October 2 at the Round Lick Baptist Church for Mr. Gammons, 68, formerly of Watertown.
A teacher and artist, Mr. Gammons died September 24, 2008 in White Plains, New York at the White Plains Hospital following a brief illness.
Born February 16, 1940 in Old Hickory, he was the son of the late Andrew Johnson Gammons and Nora Louise Orrand Gammons.
A 1958 graduate of Watertown High School, he earned degrees from Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Maryland.
Mr. Gammons taught art and English in Silver Springs, Maryland from 1962 to 1970. He then moved to New York City and taught art at the Valhalla School District until his retirement in 1966.
An accomplished artist, he exhibited his work locally in New York as well as in Lebanon. He also hosted a painting show on the local cable channel called "Let’s Paint".
A man of many talents and hobbies, he was also a successful breeder and exhibitor of miniature poodles.
Visitation will be held prior to the services Thursday morning at the church.
Services will be conducted by Rev. Steve Mayle with burial at the Jones Hill Cemetery.
He is survived by his life partner of 33 years Robert F. Distasio of White Plains, NY as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins in Tennessee; along with friends in New York, Tennessee and Connecticut.
A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Gammons’ life is planned for early November in White Plains, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society or the Humane Society of America.
