Lebanon Mayoral candidate David Kievernagel was arrested and charged with simple assault related to domestic violence following an incident that occurred at his residence Sunday afternoon.

According to a report from Lebanon Police Department Cpl. Jerimy Pruitte, police responded earlier that day to a 911 call from Kievernagel who was found walking along the 5500 Lebanon Road area. Pruitte noted in his report that Kievernagel allegedly smelled of alcohol upon his arrival.

Kievernagel told officers that he began walking at 5588 Lebanon Road, after an argument with his wife, Leslie, ensued in the car. Both parties said that there was not a physical altercation at that time. Kievernagel, who said he was in pain due to a recent medical procedure, chose to ride to the hospital with friends instead of being transported by ambulance.

The police department received a second 911 call a few hours later regarding a domestic altercation at the Kieverngels’ residence. Pruitte spoke with two of the couples’ friends outside of the residence, who informed him that Kievernagel was inside of the residence and refused to let his wife leave. One of the friends also informed the officer that there was a gun inside of the residence.

“When we respond to those calls, one of our jobs is to determine the primary aggressor. The officers decided they had probable cause and arrested Mr. Kievernagel,” Chief Scott Bowen said.

Pruitte reported that once inside the residence he found “Leslie was very upset and a strong smell of alcoholic beverage coming from David … Leslie stated that she went inside the residence and David followed her in and locked the door. Leslie stated that she was going to leave and go to a friend’s house.”

At that point, Leslie told police that Kievernagel began to curse and throw things inside of the house, before physically climbing on top of her to restrain her from leaving.

Kievernagel was transported to booking by LPD Officer Cody Bryan. Officer Craig Brown at the Wilson County Jail said Kievernagel was released on his own recognizance Sunday afternoon.

Kievernagel filed his petition to run for Lebanon City Mayor on Aug. 10.
