LAFAYETTE -- No. 2 seeded Watertown needed two overtimes to knock off stubborn Gordonsville 69-64 in Friday's semifinal round of the District 8A boys tournament at Macon County High.
The Purple Tigers improved to 23-5 with the victory and earned another crack at No. 1-seeded Friendship Christian School in Tuesday's 8 p.m. finals. Friendship won both regular season meetings between the rivals.
The game was tied at 53-all, then 60-60 after the first overtime. KeAnDre Bates paced Watertown with 22 points, Josiah Smith added 17 and Macieo Gaines had nine in his first action since having his knee scoped.
Friendship toppled No. 5 seed Trousdale County High 68-40 Friday -- running out to a 32-14 halftime lead.
Mark Sandoval and Dalton Patterson each had 15 for the winners while Hunter Anderson added 13. FCS stands 21-2 headed into Tuesday's finals.
By virtue of reaching the 8A finals, both FCS and Watertown will host first round Region 4A games next Saturday before the rest of the tournament moves to Livingston.
