Master: Caleb Thorne, Thorne Excavating Company

Breed: American black Labrador retriever

Age: 2 years

Favorite food: Frosty Paws (ice cream treat for dogs)

Origin: Purchased him six months before he was born from a breeder in Fort Valley, Ga., desiring a lake dog and hunting dog since he lives on a lake and dove hunts.

The story: He always goes with me, Thorne says. He comes to work with me and goes out to job sites. We drive about 550 to 600 miles a week. He just likes going rather than staying. One day here at the office, a doe came out of the woods with a fawn, and he took off chasing the doe and fawn into the woods. Next thing you know, the doe was chasing him out of the woods and around the yard. Ive got it on video.

Master: Timothy Johnson, family caregiver

Breed: Boston terrier

Age: 5 years

Favorite food: Vienna sausages

Origin: Johnsons sister bought a Boston terrier, and he liked it so much that he got Eli for himself in Smithville. I paid $400 for him but wouldn't take $4,000 for him now, says Johnson.

The story: He rides with me all the time except when its real hot, Johnson said of the 125 to 150 miles a week they motor down the road together. Everybody wants to know if he bites. I tell em, No, but hell lick you to death. He cant wait for me to roll the window down. He likes to stick his head out the window, but when I get up to 45 miles per hour, the winds too much for him and hell come back in.

Master: Sandy Jones, controller for National Car Wash and a car wash owner

Breeds: Bordeaux mastiff and a Maltipoo (cross of Maltese and poodle)

Ages: 7 years old (140 pounds) and 12 years old (8 pounds)

Favorite food: Popcorn every night

Origins and stories: Three years ago, a friend gave Hammer to Sandy. He had been strictly an outside dog, says Jones. He was not happy being an outside dog. He likes to be with you. He lives in our house and stays with us in the office. The friend has said that Hammer won the dog lottery. Peppie was a gift that Sandy and her husband gave to her mom 11 years ago for Mothers Day. For the next five years that she lived, he stayed by her side in the bed as her companion. Since her death, he represents her to me. I feel like my mom is with me. The doggy duo rides 400 to 500 miles a week with Jones and tag along on vacations with her and her husband to the mountains and to Florida. They go everywhere with us. Peppie always rides inside, and if the weather is nice, Hammer likes to ride in the bed, said Jones. Peppie also rides on her masters motorcycle and Ski-Doo, while Hammer rides on their boat and four-wheeler.

Masters: Melissa McGregor, surgical technician, and sons Morgan, 8, and Wyatt, 2

Breed: Catahoula

Ages: Blue is 4 years old and Doc is 2.

Favorite food: Anything grilled, especially burgers and hot dogs.

Origins: Doc is a rescue dog that Melissa adopted at New Leash on Life, and Blue was given to her by equestrian friends in Springfield, Tenn.

The story: My husband and I trail ride every weekend, and they go with us, McGregor said about the pair, who normally hitch a ride about 50 miles a week with her. Doc would rather ride in the back seat, and Blue likes to ride in the truck bed. They love it to the point that they jump in even when they are not supposed to. They know when I pull into the drive-in restaurants. They know the food is coming. I normally get them a hamburger.
