Dr. Sharon Roberts, Director of the Lebanon Special School District since 2005, has resigned that position effective Jan. 1.

Dr. Roberts, who received her undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degrees from The University of Tennessee in Knoxville, has accepted a position as Chief Operating Officer of Tennessee SCORE (State Collaborative on Reforming Education).

Tennessee SCORE is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization chaired by former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist. SCOREs mission is to work with state and local governments to encourage sound policy decisions in public education, and to advance innovative reform on a statewide basis.

"The move is not one that I had sought or anticipated at this point in my career," Dr. Roberts said in a prepared statement emailed to administrators and faculty members in the LSSD earlier today.

"However, it provides an exciting opportunity to serve as a resource for information and implementation on state level reform, especially the work tied to our state's First to the Top initiatives. I will continue to be heavily involved in the TIGER teacher evaluation work which will allow me the opportunity to stay somewhat connected to LSSD."

Prior to accepting the LSSD job, Dr. Roberts was a special education and middle school teacher, consulting teacher, elementary school principal, and Assistant Superintendent in the Knox County Schools System.

"It is a bitter sweet opportunity for me because I cherish this school system and I truly care for each person," Dr. Roberts said in the email.

"Together, we have accomplished so much for the boys and girls of Lebanon! I am incredibly proud of the leadership within our system and in awe of what you do each and every day! I am excited to have been a part of the rich history of this great school system and eager to see the wonderful things that lie ahead! Forever, I will consider you my family and LSSD will always be in my heart.

"We have been so fortunate to have such a supportive Board of Education. Please know that the Board has every intention to continue to ensure you have what you need to continue the great work that you are doing. I am sure that they will move quickly to provide the leadership needed. I urge you to keep moving forward in helping our children be successful. The work is too important".
