Drug roundup targets 21 in Wilson County
By JENNIFER HORTONThe Wilson PostAuthorities fanned out Thursday to find and arrest 21 people on a wide range of narcotics charges in another roundup conducted by the Violent Crimes and Narcotics Task Force, a joint operation between Wilson County Sheriff’s Department and Lebanon Police Department. As of about 4 p.m., Thursday, 16 people had been arrested and charged.“This is ongoing,” said Wilson County Sheriff Terry Ashe, adding “a lot of these people have gang (affiliations).”Det. Kenny Powers of the LPD and Det. Jeremey Reich of the WCSD headed up the VCN operation and served as case agents.Powers said the roundup began about 9 a.m. after the indictments were handed down by the grand jury. The investigation has stretched from one end of the county to the other, he said, noting that included Lebanon, Watertown and Mt. Juliet and those who live outside the cities’ limits.“We appreciate the cooperation from (Commissioner of Public Safety) Billy Weeks, (Sheriff) Terry Ashe and (Mt. Juliet Police Chief) Andy Garrett,” Powers added. Those charged were found to reportedly have in their possession cocaine, crack cocaine, morphine pills and marijuana.Powers noted the VCN was formed about a year ago between LPD and the Sheriff’s Department to try and combat the ongoing drug trade and gang memberships that some of those arrested have had. This particular drug investigation began about a year ago, Powers said, adding yesterday’s indictments by the grand jury were the “first of many more drug indictments.”Several of those arrested were on probation for previous drug offenses, the detective said.Powers said the VCN is still working on drug investigations. “We want to let our drug dealers know we’re not going anywhere.”He added investigators are working to see that drug crimes are prosecuted on the federal level when possible where penalties are much stiffer. Those arrested and charged so far are as follows:• Kayla Connelly, 19, of 356 Spring Valley Road, Mt.
