Emmy Lou Dowdy, 95
LEBANON – Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 25 at the First United Methodist Church for Mrs. Dowdy, 95, of Montgomery, AL. Formerly of Lebanon and the widow of the late Superintendent of Lebanon City Schools William LeRoy “Roy” Dowdy, Jr., she died Mar. 20, 2010, one day short of her 96th birthday in Montgomery, AL, where she had resided for two years.
Born March 21, 1914 in Pulaski, she was the daughter of the late James Thaddeus Cox and Margaret Elizabeth Lyman Cox. She grew to adulthood in Pulaski, on the Cox “Sugar Creek” Farm near Minor Hill and on Black Oak Ridge, near Knoxville. She married her late husband in 1940, after graduating from Middle Tennessee State Teachers College (Middle Tennessee State University). Mrs. Dowdy was a third grade teacher for nearly 25 years at Lebanon’s McClain and Byars-Dowdy Schools.
Prior to her teaching career, she served as Home Demonstration Agent in Cannon County and as mess hall manager/dietician at the U.S. Army’s Camp Forrest in Tullahoma during World War II, while her husband fought in Gen. George Patton’s Third Army in Europe.
Following her husband’s death in 1975 after 35 years of marriage, Mrs. Dowdy was active in Wilson County civic affairs, and as a 60-year member of First United Methodist Church of Lebanon where she served in numerous leadership capacities.
Her remains rest at the Ligon & Bobo Funeral Home, 241 West Main Street, Lebanon, where the family will receive friends on Wednesday, between the hours of 6-8 p.m.
The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Services will be conducted by Rev. David Hesson. Following burial in Wilson County Memorial Gardens, a reception for family and friends will be held at the church at 5 p.m.
Survivors include: children Dr. William LeRoy Dowdy III (Maria-Teresa) of Montgomery, AL and attorney Emily Louise Dowdy (Joseph Sergo) of Panama City, FL. Also surviving is grandson Morgan Bradford Dowdy of Tuscaloosa, AL; sister Margaret Bibb, of Clarksville; nieces Claire Payne of Houston, TX, Betty Morrison and Lydia Cox -- of Nashville nd nephews Jimmy Cox of Fayetteville, David Bibb of Woodbridge, VA., and Jeff Bibb of Clarksville, as well as six nephews and two nieces in her late husband’s family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Dowdy was preceded in death by brothers Lyman Cox and Parmenas Cox. Pallbearers: Morgan Dowdy, Jimmy Cox, David and Jeff Bibb, and Karl and Al Nations.
