“Inherit the Wind” by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee, opens at Encore Theatre Company on Friday, April 17, for a three-weekend run.
Director Jason Deathridge said, “This is the fictionalized account of the Scopes ‘Monkey’ trial which took place in Dayton, Tenn. in 1925. This event not only shook the world, but turned the small rural town on its end” when a high school science teacher attempted to teach Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, contrary to a Tennessee state law that prohibited the teaching of anything besides creationism.
“Inherit the Wind” will take you to the fictional town of Hillsboro where you will be caught up in the carnival-like atmosphere that permeates this little town throughout the landmark trial.
Christopher Rivers, last seen at Encore in “Of Mice and Men,” also directed by Deathridge, plays the science teacher Bert Cates, on trial for flagrantly ignoring the law and teaching the theory of evolution. Hugh Britt, who has become a regular on the Encore stage, having most-recently played the role of Stanley in “Run for Your Wife,” is back as the forward-thinking, big city reporter E.K. Hornbeck. Jeff McCann brings his experience to the Encore stage as the confident, risk-taking defense attorney Henry Drummond, while Don Henry portrays the defiant and devout Matthew Harrison Brady.
Encore is proud, once again, to showcase community talent that includes Encore veterans of all ages including David Reichert (Mayor), Frank Fox (zealous spiritual leader Rev. Brown), William Crutcher (D.A. Tom Davenport), Joel Meriwether (the Judge), Paula Fox (Mrs. Brady), Richard Christensen (Meeker) and Jessica Karstens (Rachel). You will also see Shirley Maschinski, David Unland, Kaleigh Reichert, Jonathan Burgess, Cody Allen, Amber Woodard, Roderick Topp and Robert Wilson in their various townspeople roles in the rural Hillsboro metropolis.
