An investigation into the death of the wife of a Lebanon firefighter is now being handled by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Murfreesboro Police Department as authorities believe that is where the woman’s death occurred.
The body of Carla Hicks, 38, was found Friday in a wooded area off Highway 452, near Highway 231, not far from the SuperSpeedway. A TBI spokesperson said the time of death was within the past couple of days prior to her discovery.
She was the wife of Lebanon Firefighter Michael Hicks, 43, who was arrested on a charge of abuse of a corpse after Wilson County Sheriff’s Department received information regarding the woman’s death.
Sheriff Terry Ashe said that at the very least, Hicks got rid of his wife’s body by dumping it alongside the road.
Hicks was arrested early Sunday while on the job at the Lebanon Fire Department. He went before General Sessions Judge Robert Hamilton on Monday and was released after a bond of $10,000 was set.
“His behavior points toward homicide,” Ashe said. “He showed no signs of remorse. He was out at the fair Saturday night having fun.”
Hicks did not enter a plea in his hearing before Hamilton on Monday, but he is claiming that his wife killed herself.
According to a Murfreesboro police report in March, officers went to the Hicks’s home there to investigate an attempted suicide. The report said Mrs. Hicks admitted she took a bottle of aspirin and approximately 20 to 30 Zanax tablets.
Authorities executed a search warrant at the Hicks’s residence Monday to look for any clues explaining how or why she died. Results of the search had not been filed at press time. The autopsy on Mrs. Hicks’s body was inconclusive so it has not been ruled a homicide and the cause of death remains unknown. Authorities are swaiting the results of s toxicology report, which may take weeks.
"I've known him professionally for years and he is not an accurate representative of the Lebanon Fire Department, which is one of the best in the state," Ashe said. Hicks has been suspended by the LFD pending a hearing.
