A grandfather was expected to be charged Thursday afternoon in the shooting death of his grandson in an incident that occurred at a residence on Chicken Road on Wednesday night.

Wilson County Sheriff Robert Bryan said a call came in between 8 and 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, regarding a shooting at the home at 3330 Chicken Road.

Upon arrival, authorities found one person, a male, deceased, one female who had been shot in the lower part of her body and another male who had been injured, but not shot.

The deceased was identified as James Earl Chase Hoover, who was in his early 30s. The injured woman, with whom the deceased had a relationship, was identified as Crystal Renee Colyer, who is in her early 30s. The other injured person was identified as James Frances Hoover, grandfather of the deceased person. He is in his mid-70s.

Bryan said Colyer and James Frances Hoover were transported to University Medical Center for initial treatment and were then transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Hoover, the grandfather, was expected to be discharged from the hospital Thursday afternoon and then brought to the Wilson County Jail where warrants were to be served, charging him with Criminal Homicide and Attempted Criminal Homicide.

“All three individuals have histories in the criminal justice system in Wilson County,” Bryan said. He added that investigators believe the shooting occurred as a result of some kind of altercation and that “Alcohol and narcotics were involved in some form or fashion. That may have played a part in it.”

The three individuals lived at the residence on Chicken Road for several years. “There was an ongoing domestic-type situation,” the sheriff said.

“We spent pretty much all night at the scene, collecting evidence, and at the hospital interviewing both injured (persons). We didn’t release the scene until 8 o’clock (Thursday) morning.”
