A groundbreaking ceremony for the Wilson County Veteran’s Memorial Park and Museum will be held on Monday, Nov. 11 at the location next to the Wilson County Courthouse.
The groundbreaking, which will follow a special Veterans Day program led by members of the American Legion at 11 a.m., will kick-off Phase I of the estimated $1.2 million project, said Veteran’s Services Officer Bernie Ash.
Phase I of the park includes a permanent sign and outdoor seating surrounding a memorial fountain. “We have raised about $700,000 of the total cost and have also had materials donated that has cut the cost down,” Ash said.
Phases II and III include a building with office space for the Veteran’s Services Office and the museum.
“It is going to be a big day for us,” Ash said, adding that more fundraising opportunities are being planned for spring 2014. “We may do another bike ride or maybe a 5K.”
Design and construction of the project has been left in the hands of Architect Jeff Hall, Mike Manous of Manous Designs, Wayne Oakley and Sam Anderson.
