Although military or Guard officials will not confirm returning dates, it’s believed now that the Lebanon unit will arrive at Camp Shelby, Miss. on or about July 27, for a demobilization process and then be flown to the National Guard Volunteer Training Site in Smyrna where members of the unit will receive final clearance to return to their homes and families.
Four units of the 278th have already returned home. The latest to return arrived at Smyrna Saturday. Two other units came home in June.
The change in U.S. military policy which has resulted in the downgrading of the number of military personnel serving in Iraq is causing the deployments of many National Guard units to be cut almost in half from the time originally anticipated they would be away from their home stations.
