After siding with Ward 6 Councilor Kathy Warmath at the previous meeting on buying trucks from Mt. Juliet instead of Nashville, Mayor Philip Craighead broke two tied votes against shopping in the county.

The first vote was for a three-quarter ton pickup truck for the Sewer Department to be bought from Two Rivers Ford in Mt. Juliet for around $700 more than the lowest bid from Alexander Chevrolet. The vote was tied with Councilors Alex Buhler, Ward 1; William Farmer, Ward 3; and Joe Hayes, Ward 4, voting against, and Kevin Huddleston, Ward 2; Haywood Barry, Ward 5; and Warmath voting in favor. Craighead voted against the ordinance.

The second vote was for a three-quarter ton diesel pickup truck for the Gas Department to be purchased from Alexander Chevrolet, which had the lowest bid. Craighead broke a tie in favor of the ordinance.

The other main issue on the agenda was the annexation of property on Peyton Road to be used to build a home for lower-income elderly people. Craighead said that he had asked the Peyton Road Church of Christ, whose building is next to the property in question, to act as a shepherd for this endeavor.

“I know that Andy (Wright, city attorney) is going to add to these ordinances that the City of Lebanon will not pay for utilities on this property,” Farmer said, “but I want to go ahead and amend this to add in the binding portion of the ordinances that no city money will be spent on gas, water, electric or streets unless it is approved by the city council.”

The amendment was accepted and the ordinances to annex as well as the ordinance to zone the property were passed as amended.

“This is all a part of the Continuum of Care,” Craighead said. “This is really going to help some people and that’s what we should be all about.”

In other business, Huddleston announced that on Saturday, Nov. 21, a harvest dinner would be held in the Market Street community for needy families.

“If you know anyone who would benefit from this,” Huddleston said, “we will begin serving at 4 p.m.”
