The Tennessee Highway Patrol has confirmed one person has died in a crash involving a truck and a school bus in Wilson County.

The crash happened around 3 p.m. as the bus was heading west on Bates Road, near Highway 109 in Lebanon. Authorities say the bus had just stopped to let two children off when the pickup truck hit it from behind.

THP spokesperson Mike Browning confirms the driver of the truck, Phillip Houston, of Lebanon, died at the scene. Browning said there was a minor female passenger in the truck with Houston who was transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Four elementary school children were riding the bus at the time of the crash, but Browning said the bus driver and the children were not injured. THP and Wilson County Emergency Management are investigating the accident.

THP is doing an extensive traffic study and scene analysis to determine what exactly happened. Preliminary reports show that the bus driver did follow proper procedures when stopping and that Houston just failed to stop. At this time, it is unsure but unlikely that alcohol was involved.
