Legislature, parties should address revenue issues facing Tennessee
To the Editor:
The current squabble about the elected Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives would be comical if there were not so many pressing issues that need addressing.
Having been a keen observer of the political process, as well as shenanigans, for the past 50 years, there is very little that surprises me. However, this particular situation would be near the top of my disgust list.
If the elected speaker, Rep. Kent Williams, is indeed guilty of what he has been accused, he is not fit to sit in the State Legislature, much less be Speaker of the House. An apology would not be sufficient to resolve this particular transgression. It is standard procedure for politicians to keep errors or transgressions of other politicians in secret until the prior action can be used against the sinner. That need arose with the election of a Republican by the minority Democrats as Speaker of the House.
Enter Jason Mumpower, who was certain he would be elected speaker by the newly elected Republican majority. Regarding the “transgression,” anyone who was aware of the “transgression” soon after it happened and took no action is not fit to sit in the State House.
Also, both parties need to quit playing their childish games and address the cavernous deficit in state revenues relative to state expenses as well as other major problems our state faces.
