A memorial service will be held Sunday, Sept. 21 at the Maple Hill church of Christ for the couple. Their motorcycle friends will meet at the Lebanon Public Square at 1:45 and for a motorcade to the church for the 2 p.m. service.
According to reports from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Shumakers were traveling northbound on Tennessee Highway 56 near Coalmont when they were struck by a southbound 2005 Nissan Titan truck being driven by Christy Dykes, 33, of the Summerfield Community near Tracy City.
THP reports indicate the two vehicles were negotiating a curve in the roadway when the truck crossed over the yellow line and hit the motorcycle head-on.
Charges against Ms. Dykes are pending, depending on toxicology reports, indicated Laura McPherson, spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Safety.
Mr. Shumaker died at the scene. His wife was transported to Chattanooga’s Erlanger Hospital by Life Force helicopter where she was pronounced dead.
Burial will be at the Marked Tree Cemetery in Marked Tree, Ark.
Survivors include: daughter Stephanie (Kirby) Kendall of Austin, Texas and grandchildren Stephen, Darby and Emerson Kendall – all of Austin.
Also surviving are Mr. Shumaker’s sisters Angie Dunn of Chelsea, Okla. and Solonnge Ford of Marion, Ark. and Mrs. Shumaker’s siblings Jimmy Ford of Memphis, Billy Ray Ford of Marion, Ark. and Mary Jane Hornberger of Pickwick Lake; and special nephew Peyton Moore of Marion, Ark.
They were preceded in death by their parents Rex and Myrtis Ford and Lewis and Lavelle Shumaker and their son Rex Shumaker.
Memorials may be directed to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Romanian Christians.
