GLADEVILLE -- Wilson Centrals basketball teams tuned-up for a busy weekend of tournament hoops with a season-opening sweep of visiting Smyrna Tuesday night.
The Lady Wildcats cruised to a 71-35 win over Smyrna in the opener while the WCHS boys pulled off a 58-49 victory in the nightcap.
Coach Bud Brandons girls will open play Friday in the Mountain View Tournament at Bradley Central in Cleveland against McMinn County. Tip-off is set for 2:45 p.m. CST. Second round play is set for Saturday as Central will face either Oak ridge or Chattanooga Girls Preparatory. Tournament finals are set for Sunday afternoon.
Taylor Peterson lit up the nets Tuesday against Smyrna, drilling three 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 27 points. Sydney Vanlandingham added 17 points while Dominique St. Louis had 10 points. The Lady Wildcats led 20-10 after one quarter and 48-23 at intermission.
Coach Troy Bonds Wildcats got 17 points from Dee Oldham and 14 from Malcolm St. Louis in their win over the Bulldogs. Tyler Soffiantino and Blake Huffman each had eight points for Central while Connor Brandon added seven.
The Wildcats will play in the Venture Express Classic this weekend at Siegel High in Murfreesboro. Plans call for WC to face Shelbyville Central at 5:30 p.m. Friday afternoon; then play Nashville Maplewood Saturday at 4 p.m.
(girls) Lebanon 74, Whites Creek 35
ANTIOCH -- Lebanon Highs Devilettes improved to 1-2 on the season following Tuesdays 74-35 win over Whites Creek in the LeRoy Wright / Civitan Thanksgiving Tournament at Cane Ridge High.
Guard Julia Fox led Lebanon with 21 points, drilling five 3-pointers. Kelsey Yarbrough and Katie Blackburn added nine points each while Kristen Dedman helped out with eight points -- including two 3-pointers.
Coach Larry Inmans team took a 17-10 lead after the first quarter and a 39-21 lead into the locker room at intermission.
Lebanon is scheduled to take on host Cane Ridge Friday at 7 p.m. in the tournament semifinals.
JPII sweeps MJCA
HENDERSONVILLE -- Mt. Juliet Christian dropped a basketball doubleheader at Pope John Paul II Tuesday night. The Saints committed 25 turnovers -- 21 in the first half -- in a 61-49 loss to the Knights.
I feel that we got better tonight, said MJCA coach Paul Christensen. I love coaching these guys. They are not quitters and are always trying to get better.
Trevor West led MJCA (2-1) in scoring with 15 points while Ben Wankel added 13 points. Zack Pollock had six and Sam Mummert five.
The MJCA Lady Saints dropped to 2-1 on the season with a 52-33 loss to Pope John Paul II in Tuesday nights opener. An active fullcourt press caused MJCA problems as JPII ran out to a 16-5 lead after one period and a 29-11 advantage at intermission.
Lynnze Ethridge paced Mt. Juliet Christian with 15 points while Lauren Wankel and Jessica Melvin each finished with five points.
MJ Christian is scheduled to host Watertown High Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m.
