LEBANON -- A Celebration of Life will be conducted 12 Noon, Thursday, Nov. 18, at the Garden of Prayer Tabernacle, 1015 Bluebird Road, for Mrs. McGowan, 85, of Lebanon.
Born January 3, 1925 in Enterprise, AL to the late Lela Belcher and Curt Brown, she died Nov. 12, 2010 at Lebanon's University Medical Center.
Mrs. McGowan worked in the public school system for 33 years and retired at the age of 75 from Sam Houston Elementary School.
A longtime member of the Lebanon Primitive Baptist Church, she served as church secretary, choir member, member of the Mother’s Board, kitchen committee, and in many other auxiliaries until her health failed her.
A family and friend visitation is planned Wednesday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. at Cedars of Lebanon Primitive Baptist Church, 201 Beard Ave., and from 11 a.m. until the service Thursday at the Garden of Prayer Tabernacle.
Interment will follow at Mt. Lebanon Memorial Gardens.
She leaves to cherish her memory children Jerry McGowan, Joseph M. (Joe Mike) McGowan and Clara F McGowan -- all of Lebanon.
Also surviving are grandchildren Maurice McGowan, Cheryl (Robert) Knight, Mario McGowan, Chequita McGowan, Tre McGowan, Marcus Kirkendoll -- all of Lebanon, Dereathia Neuble and Curt McGowan -- both of Hartsville, Daryll McGowan of Dickson, Shelby Turner of Hendersonville, Mark Clemmons of Atlanta, GA, Reginald Robinson of Asheville, NC and Antonio McGowan of Oklahoma City, OK; as well as 22 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; five sisters, three precede her in death (Annie C Wilkerson, Willie M. Terry, and Clara Brown Rowe) Ola Mae Rivers of Newark, NJ and Gritha Lee Hawkins of Enterprise, AL; two brothers, one preceded her in death (William C Brown) and James W Brown of Enterprise, AL; four sisters-in-laws Ann Brown, Enterprise, AL, Pauline Brown, Tallahassee FL, Irene Griffin, Detroit MI and Juanita Andrews Lebanon; two daughter-in-laws, one preceded her in death (Dianthia Y. McGowan) and Patricia McGowan of Lebanon; devoted niece Annette Jones of Enterprise, AL and devoted nephew Bruce Andrews of Murfreesboro.
She had several play children and several special friends.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. McGowan is preceded in death by husband George M. McGowan Sr.; three children who died before birth and sons Jimmy E McGowan and George M. McGowan, Jr.
