MJ pair head to college
Two players from Mt. Juliet High's Class AAA runner-up baseball team will be continuing their academic and baseball careers at the next level.
Righthanded pitcher Matt Sedgwick will enroll at NCAA Division III institution Maryville College this fall while outfielder / first baseman Matt Owens signed with TranSouth Conference member Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville.
The son of Chuck and Darlene Sedgwick from Old Hickory, Matt held opponents to a batting average of .095, while also averaging 1.55 strikeouts per inning.
Also, Matt helped open the new on-campus field at MJHS by throwing a no-hitter against McGavock High School.
"Matt has tremendous upside as pitcher in our program, and our coaching staff expects him to battle for innings from the outset of the fall," said Maryville head coach Daniel Washburn.
"If he develops the way that we expect, he has a chance to be an impact arm for our club for the next four years. Matt makes our program better not only next spring, but in the years to come. The entire Maryville College baseball program would like to welcome Matthew to our campus and our community."
Owens graduated with highest honors last week (16th of 377) and earned all-district 9AAA and 9AAA tournament team honors this year for the 31-13 Bears.
Owens batted .375 with 24 RBI’s. He lead the Golden Bears with 51 hits that included eight doubles, three triples and two HR’s.
"Matt is a great local high school sign for us," said Trevecca head coach Jonathan Burton.
"He is still maturing and developing into a great player, and we feel that his best days are ahead of him. The one thing that makes Matt stands out is that he is not only a great player but a great teammate and student as well.
"We just hope that his next four years at Trevecca will be as good as the ones he just had at Mt. Juliet for Coach Purvis."
