GREENEVILLE -- Defending GreenBank Ladies Classic champion Mt. Juliet High blew out Oak Ridge 53-29 Wednesday in a quarterfinal contest at Hal Henard Gymnasium.
Mt. Juliet (12-1) was scheduled to take on Rockcastle County, Ky., (9-0) Thursday evening in the tournament semifinal round. Rockcastle defeated South Greene 66-37 on Wednesday. Tournament finals and consolation finals are on tap for Friday. Mt. Juliet will face either Hoover, AL or host Greeneville on Friday.
The Lady Bears roared out of the starting blocks to an 18-4 first quarter lead, owned a 29-9 advantage at halftime and spent the second half in cruise control.
Guard Helen Mitchner was efficient, requiring just six shots to score a game-high 15 points for Mt. Juliet. Mitchner, who canned 4-of-5 three-pointers, also contributed four of the team’s 14 steals.
Junior center Caya Williams added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Lady Bears, who drew assists on 15 of their 21 field goals. Mt. Juliet has connected on 46 buckets in two tournament games, 35 coming off an assist.
Armeka Booker scored 11 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked four shots for the Wildcats (8-4), but made just 4-of-14 shots. Oak Ridge’s other starters combined for only 10 points.
