MJPD: Suspect has change of heart, turns self in

After the alleged burglaries, Sparks drove the stolen vehicle to Mt. Juliet and ate at a McDonalds off Interstate 40. Chandler said it was there that Sparks began to consider turning himself in to authorities. He made the decision to drive to the MJPD headquarters to confess.

He walked in and told me that he had just stolen a car and its parked out front, said MJPD Clerk Kinnie Long. It was shocking. He even stated he felt bad for what he had done.

Chandler said investigators met with Sparks regarding the burglaries and when they asked him why he turned himself in, Sparks reportedly told them he wanted to start doing the right thing.

Its very uncommon to have someone willingly confess to crimes, Chandler said. Its inspiring to see Austin have a change of heart. Hopefully he is now on the right track in life.

Sparks is in custody at the Wilson County Jail, awaiting Mt. Pleasant authorities.
