CU IS IN SATURDAY FINALS
LEBANON -- No. 3-seeded Cumberland University earned a berth in Saturday's Region XI finals thanks to a 9-4 victory Thursday afternoon over No. 5 Martin Methodist in the winner's barcket finals at Stockton Field.
The only full game played Thursday due to heavy rain found CU (44-19) jumping to an early lead with a four-run outburst in the bottom of the fourth, keyed by a massive three-run homer off the bat of catcher Michael Wheeler.
Scrappy Martin Methodist (33-23) cut the margin to 4-3 with single runs in each of the next three frames, the Bulldogs pushed across three runs in the bottom of the sixth and added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth.
The victory was the 10th in a row for Coach Woody Hunt's Bulldogs, who last week swept through the TranSouth Conference tournament with five straight wins.
Senior Matt Madigan (8-2) worked six innings for the win, scattering six hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Aaron Tant picked up his fourth save of the season, going the final three innings allowing just one hit.
Wheeler added a solo HR in the seventh, his 14th round-tripper of the year, stretching his current hitting streak to 15 consecutive games.
CU will be idle until 12 Noon Saturday as they await a team to come out of the loser's bracket.
