Three Cumberland baseball players have been named first team all-conference by the TranSouth Conference. Honorees include: Pitcher Lance McClain, a junior lefty out of Knoxville. The transfer from the University of Tennessee went 6-2 during the regular season, despite missing nearly a month due to an injury to his non-throwing hand.McClain sported an ERA of 2.47, he struck out 71 batters in 58.1 innings while holding opposition hitters to a .216 batting average. Catcher Michael Wheeler, a junior from Lebanon. Former standout at Walters State Community College hit .327 on the season in 54 starts. He slugged 10 homers with 48 RBI and 15 doubles.
He was an all-state catcher at Lebanon's Friendship Christian School. Outfielder Nick Jiles, a senior from Sacramento, CA. Jiles, a transfer from Sacramento State, Jiles hit .337 with 8 HR and 20 RBI. Jiles had 14 doubles, a tea-high four triples and 10 steals in 13 attempts. Cumberland (36-19) is playing in the TranSouth Conference tournament this week in Millington at the USA Baseball Complex as a No. 4 seed. ACADEMIC HONORS – Cumberland placed 13 players on the TranSouth Scholar-Athlete team, including: Matt Burton, Robert Clayton, Will Curry, Briggs Dixson, Chris Fanning, Nick Jiles, James Lilley, Brian Lucas, Cory Merrill, James Parker, Robert Post, Blake Simmons and Aaron Tant. |
