JACKSON -- Cumberland’s softball team will face an 11 a.m. elimination game Thursday in the TranSouth Conference tournament at Union’s Fesmire Field. The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 14-23 Wednesday with a first round 6-2 loss to Freed-Hardeman.CU, seeded No. 6, trailed 6-0 before pushing across a couple of runs in the top of the sixth inning. Freed-Hardeman’s Tarah Tucker (20-4) limited Cumberland to six hits while striking out 13 and walking three. CU centerfielder Paige Terrell collected a pair of hits while Karla Pladna, Amy Eden, Stephanie Gutierrez and Rebekah George each had a single. Alli Donnelly (5-7) took the loss for CU, scattering nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Only two Freed-Hardeman runs were earned. No. 5 seeded Lyon dropped a 5-4 decision to No. 4 seed and host Union in first round play Wednesday. SCHOLAR-ATHLETES Twelve members of the softball team have been named to the TranSouth Conference Scholar-Athlete team, including: Amy Eden, Jamie Smith, Cassie May Thompson, Jana Jones, Ashley Ferguson, Karla Pladna, Paige Terrel, Leslie Barrow, Katie Goad, Courtney Carr, Emily Smith and Jennifer Brewington. |
