RAIN STALLS PLAY IN NAIA REGION XI TOURNEY AT CU

LEBANON — Cumberland struck for three two-out runs in the top of the ninth inning Thursday morning to record an 8-6 victory over Campbellsville in the NAIA Region XI Tournament being contested at Stockton Field.

The two teams took the field at 9:45 a.m. in order to complete Wednesday’s game — which was suspended due to darkness with the scored tied 5-all.

Jason Bush drilled an RBI single with two out in the ninth, scoring a runner for catcher Michael Wheeler who had reached on a single.

Zack Diekman followed with a single, then freshman Tyler Fisher unloaded a double to deepest centerfield scoring both runners.

Aaron Tant (6-3) took the hill for CU and promptly game up a solo homer to Tiger second baseman Nathan Quesenberry — his second HR of the game.

Tant then retired the side in order with Bush closing out the game with a sliding catch in right field foul territory.

Cumberland improved to 43-19 with the victory.

Rains are presently falling in Lebanon. The field was covered immediately after the conclusion of the CU - Campbellsville game.

Plans call for CU to play Martin Methodist in the finals of the winner’s bracket as soon as the rain lifts, followed by Trevecca vs. Campbellsville in an elimination game.

ON WEDNESDAY, No. 2 seeded Trevecca Nazarene eliminated the University of the Cumberlands 14-5. Trojan first baseman Cody Heggie was 4-for-5 with four runs batted in.

Trevecca staked starting pitcher Barrett Brown (4-0) to a 7-0 lead after three innings. The Trojans improved to 37-15 with the loss while No. 1 seeded University of the Cumberlands goes home with a mark of 43-15.

Red-hot Martin Methodist ousted Lambuth University 18-7 in Wednesday's middle game.

The Redhawks pounded out 27 hits against seven Lambuth pitchers. Martin's first three hitters -- Darin Holt, Bobby Bratton and Josh Dorris -- had four hits apiece.

Martin Methodist improved to 33-22 with the victory while Lambuth goes home with a record of 29-24.
