By CONNIE ESH New Winters Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church held a motorcycle ride to benefit one of its members, James “Slide” Robertson, about two weeks ago, but since then the man’s doctor Stanley Lee says his condition has worsened and he will need a liver transplant as well as a new kidney. By CONNIE ESH New Winters Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church held a motorcycle ride to benefit one of its members, James “Slide” Robertson, about two weeks ago, but since then the man’s doctor Stanley Lee says his condition has worsened and he will need a liver transplant as well as a new kidney. Robertson has a rare blood type (B), so a donor may be harder to find. In the meantime, he is on dialysis. “The doctor says Memphis and Vanderbilt hospitals are talking back and forth about where they can do the transplant,” Robertson said. And the clinic for transplants at Vanderbilt Hospital told him that the surgery needs to be done soon. Robertson, who is a steward at the New Winters Chapel, also worked for several years at Fakes and Hooker Lumber and Building Supply before becoming ill. “The folks there have been very good to me,” he said. Pastor Willis Orr said riders from the Tennessee Road Hogs, The Big Tymers and the Lebanon L Town Riders made the first ride a success. Orr said the church is planning another ride in early September and accepting donations to help Robertson and his wife Hattie pay for medical care. And he hopes to have a larger turnout for the next ride. The September event will tentatively start at the church and ride to Long Hunter State Park. “That would be a real pretty ride,” Orr said.
