Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 at the College Hills Church of Christ for Mr. Billy Lee Cartmell, 64. Born Feb. 25, 1948, he died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012 in Murfreesboro following a battle with cancer.
Retired from Parker Seals, he was one of the driving forces behind AAU basketball in Lebanon, serving as general manager and coach of the well known Tennessee Trojans organization. Mr. Cartmell coached in all age groups from Junior Pro to the past several seasons as head coach of the Carroll Oakland boy's team.
"Billy really cared about the kids," said Wilson County Executive Randall Hutto. Back when Hutto was coaching boy's basketball at Lebanon High, he saw firsthand Mr. Cartmell's influence on local athletes.
"Billy ran a summer league and a fall league. He was all about teaching his players to compete and to play the game the right way -- to be a good teammate and to play with sportsmanship. He really invested a lot of time in the kids. He will certainly be missed."
The family will receive friends Friday, Oct. 26 between the hours of 5-7 p.m. at the JC Hellum Funeral Home on Stokes Street. Friends will share reflections on Billy's life beginning at 7 p.m.
Saturday's service will be conducted by Rev. C.L. Haynie. Interment will follow at the Mt. Lebanon Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include: his wife Karen V. Cartmell and children Rodney L. Cartmell, Yolonda (Howard) Jackson, Shondrai Shockley, Meshawn Hastings, Kalecia (George) Simmons, Jessica Butler, Jeffery Shockley, Dale (Kim) Shockley, Darrell (Karen) Shockley and Oscar A. Butler.
Also surviving is brother William (Jamie) Cartmell; sisters Ethel (Glenn) Coggins, Bernice Dobson and Maria (Troy) Scott; aunt Pearl Clark; brothers-in-law Tillman (Kim) Payne III, and James (Kerri) Payne; sister-in-law Myra (John) Burton; as well as a myriad of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services are in the care of JC Hellum Funeral Home, 107 Stokes St., Lebanon.
