Voting slow on wheel tax

Early voting continued Thursday despite the on-again, off-again rainfall on the referendum on whether to increase the county wheel tax by $25 to construct a new Lebanon High School and to purchase land for a new Watertown High School.

Through about 3 p.m., Thursday, a total of 1,249 people voted so far at all three polling places, said Martha Ann Sutherland, assistant administrator of elections. There are 67,060 registered voters in Wilson County.

High fatality rates and low seat belt use rates among teens have reached high levels year after year.

However, 2008 had fewer teenager fatalities than 2007 and dropped from 188 to 137 deaths. Mt. Juliet law enforcement officials noted that 137 deaths are still too many, and community members are working together reverse the trend.

Council defers actions against CoreTech

Lebanon City Council voted to defer all actions against CoreTech to the next scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 6 and decided to send a letter inviting CoreTech President Greg Quinn to the meeting to say what he wants to say as well as answer any questions the council might have for him.

Council took the action at Tuesday night’s regular meeting. Councilors are seeking to rescind any financial incentives previously approved for the company.

CoreTech announces abandonment of Lebanon plans at Council meeting

CoreTech Industries, Inc. is no longer considering locating its headquarters in Lebanon.

CoreTech President Greg Quinn said in a letter that was to be presented to media and Lebanon Mayor Philip Craighead at last night’s City Council meeting that “We, the management of CoreTech, are indeed sorry that we will no longer be locating our project in Lebanon, Tennessee.”
