New name surfaces for Senate seat

Joe Bond, a life-long Lebanon resident and political newcomer, is exploring the possibility of seeking the District 17 Senate seat that will be vacated by Sen. Mae Beavers, a candidate for Wilson County Mayor.
         
Bond, the son of long-time Wilson County Criminal Court Judge J.O. Bond who died late last year after an extended illness, said recently he has been approached by several political allies about his intentions in next year’s Senate race. Bond, a former mortgage banker, is employed by Johnson Controls as an Energy Consultant, would run on the Democratic ticket.

Wilson County manufacturers keep it afloat

Although there is unemployment here, the June figure released recently by the state labor department was 9.6 percent, Wilson County has not seen large layoffs by employers in recent months.

G.C. Hixson, executive director of the Joint Economic & Community Development Board, said that Wilson County is better off than other counties because of the different types of businesses here, especially the manufacturing companies.

PAC formed to push for new Lebanon High

A political action committee has been formed to provide information about the upcoming referendum for an additional $25 wheel tax to build a new Lebanon High School by a group of citizens who said they are concerned about education in Wilson County.

The PAC, called One County One Future, has established a website to answer questions voters may have about the new school and the tax.

State Attorney General: No weapons allowed in parks with school events

MT. JULIET -- Mt. Juliet commissioners voted Monday night to not opt out of a new state law that allows people with handgun carry permits to carry their guns into public parks.

Kiwanis Day of Prayer for Schools set Aug. 2

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Lebanon announce that plans are under way for the 11th annual observance of “A Day of Prayer for Our Schools” throughout Wilson County on Sunday, Aug. 2.

The purpose of this community service project is to help foster an environment in which children can begin school safely.
