They are tasked with keeping the city safe 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week – but just how well can they pour a cup of Joe? Clayborn’s Bakery customers will find out this Saturday.

From 6 a.m. until noon, Lebanon Police Officers, dispatchers and records personnel will work alongside Clayborn’s staff as part of the Tip-A-Cup fundraisers for Wilson County Relay for Life to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. LPD Communications Supervisor Courtney Sellars said that the idea stemmed from Police Chief Scott Bowen.

“It was his idea and I looked for a restaurant where we could do it. I happen to know Josh Hubbard, who owns Clayborn’s Bakery, and I thought that cops and donuts – that would be funny,” she said. “We worked together on it.”

Tip-A-Cop will donate 100 percent of the tips earned to Relay for Life and Clayborn’s Bakery has pledged to donate a percentage of the day’s sales to the cause.

Sellars said that LPD has been really active in Relay for Life over the past few years. “It gets us out in the community and lets them know that we care. We are there for them not just in an emergency situation – but we are there for them health-wise.”

Wilson County’s Relay for Life will be held Friday, June 21 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the track at Stroud Gwynn Field on the Castle Heights campus to honor cancer survivors and raise awareness. The American Cancer Society uses the funds raised to invest in groundbreaking research in every type of cancer and provide free information and services to cancer patients and their caregivers. There will be food, games, and activities for all ages.

If you would like to join the Lebanon Police Department’s team, or donate to the cause, you may do so at www.relayforlife.org.

WBMS awarded $10,000 grant for P.E.
Tuesday, May 21, 2013

Winfree-Bryant Middle School has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation as part of the Shape the State grant program.

The school’s physical education teachers, led by Jeramy Ezell and Megan Braundmeier, said they hope the SPARK curriculum, training and needed materials that will be purchased with the grant funds will help instill in students a life dedicated to healthy living.

SPARK is a research-based, public-health organization dedicated to creating, implementing, and evaluating programs that promote lifelong wellness.

Since 1980, childhood obesity rates in the U.S have more than tripled. In Tennessee, about 4 in 10 children are overweight or obese, according to state Department of Health data, a statistic officials are working to improve.

In an effort to alleviate this problem, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation is awarding up to 20 grants valued at $10,000 each to Tennessee middle schools as part of the Shape the State grant program.

A crowd gathered around the Capitol Theatre Thursday night, not for a movie, but instead, to witness the lighting of the old theatre's marquee for the first time in 33 years.

Sam Hatcher, whose family originally owned the theatre, following a countdown from the crowd, flipped the switch and brought the historic landmark back to life. The marquee bathed West Main Street in a glow of green light, which wowed the crowd and passersby.
