At that time, a 2009 Chevy pickup driven by Michael Bradshaw of Cookeville, attempted to avoid the crash and the driver applied the breaks. A 2003 Nissan Altima driven by Nani Rice of Lebanon then rear-ended Bradshaws pickup and in turn, was rear-ended by a 2002 Ford Escape driven by Johnny Boze, an Arkansas resident.
Rice was reportedly carrying a three-year old passenger, who Trooper Tim Bennett noted was properly restrained and sustained no injuries. In his report, Bennett noted that every driver was wearing his or her seatbelt.
The westbound lanes of I-40 were shutdown for roughly 40 minutes while crews worked the scene. All lanes were reopened by 7:30 a.m.
