LEBANON – Memorial services have been scheduled for 3-5 p.m. Friday, December 5 at the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 7463 Hickory Ridge Road, for Mr. Embury, 88, of Mt. Juliet. Known affectionately known as "Mr. Lovely,” he passed away November 30, 2009.

Survivors include: his wife of 52 years Liz Embury; daughters Mary (David) Rowan and Nancy (Ed) Walker; grandchildren Sandi (Steve) Waldron, Debbie (Jimmy) Myers, Michelle (David) Peters and Scott Walker; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Mr. Embury is preceded in death by his mother, Lillian Edison and sister, Dora Poole.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association.

MT. JULIET – Memorial services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 2 at Sellars Funeral Home at Mt. Juliet for Mr. Smith, 73, of Portland. A longtime resident of Mt. Juliet and a graduate of Mt. Juliet High School, Mr. Smith died November 29, 2009.

Retired from Ford Glass after 39 years of service, he enjoyed bluegrass gospel music and playing the mandolin and harmonica with his family and friends.

Visitation Wednesday from 12 Noon until the memorial. Services will be conducted by Brother Bill Smith.

Survivors include: his wife of 31 years Pam Smith; children Tonya Waldron, Tracy D. Smith and Terry W. (Velma) Smith; step-children Shannon (Mark) French, Shelley (Robert) Martin and M. Shane Mosley.
Also surviving are siblings Raymond T. (Lawanna) Smith of Marietta, GA, Warren (Carolyn) Smith & Mary Jo (Johnny) Harper – all of Lebanon and Evelyn (Thelbert) Powell of Mt. Juliet; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents Porter Mizell and Mary Edna Burton Smith.

Memorial contributions may be made to any Hospice organization.

ROME, Ga. – Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, December 2 at the Rome First United Methodist Church for Mrs. Dean, 86, formerly of Mt. Juliet. Widow of the late Rev. Kenneth Harold Dean, she died Nov. 28, 2009, in a Rome hospital.

Born in Jasper, Missouri, she was a dedicated mother and pastor’s wife, Mrs. Dean retired from the Ingram Book Company in Nashville following several years of employment.  She was a member of the Mt. Juliet Church of God for many years -- the church where her husband served as founding Pastor.

Survivors include children Bonnie Dean (Jerry) Slagle of Phoenix, AZ; and Dr. Darrell (Linda) Dean of Rome, GA.  Also surviving are five grandchildren, four great grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Mt. Juliet Church of God, 495 N. Mt. Juliet Road, Mt. Juliet, TN  37122-3312.

Michael Wayne Haley, 60 PDF Print E-mail

MT. JULIET – Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning, December 1 at Bond Memorial Chapel for Mr. Haley, 60, of Mt. Juliet. A Bronze Star-winning helicopter pilot for the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and a former flight instructor at Ft. Rucker, Alabama, Chief Warrant Officer Haley died Nov. 26, 2009.

A graduate of Dickson High School and as former student at Austin Peay University,  Mr. Haley was credited with saving numerous lives of fellow servicemen during by piloting AH-1G’s in and out of hostile and actively combative territories with the 175th Assault Helicopter Company also known as “The Outlaws”.

He served in the Tennessee Army National Guard and was a member of the Mt. Juliet Lodge 642 Free & Accepted Masons.  Mr. Haley eventually earned a Master of Science Degree from the University of Tennessee. He served as a law enforcement officer in Dickson, to retiring from a Fortune 100 company as the executive human resource manager.  He was a devoted member of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association.

Interment with military honors followed at Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery.
Survivors include: wife Marilyn Colgate Haley of Mt. Juliet; and daughters Stephanie (Barry) Estes of Burns and Hollie Haley of Dickson.

Also surviving are brothers Tom (Gloria) Haley and Steve Haley of Dickson; grandchildren Emmy Lynn and Easton Estes of Burns; sister-in-law Billie (Chris) Flowers of Donelson; step-daughter Leah (Tim) Hedge of Tullahoma; step-grandchildren T.C., MaryCate and Jay Hedge, Kaitlyn Flowers, Rick and Nick Carter along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Haley, Sr. and Jewel Burns Haley and brother Larry Haley. 

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, 38105 or to the American Heart Association, 1101 Northchase Parkway, Suite 1, Marietta, GA 30067.

The family wishes to sincerely express unequivocal gratitude to all friends, fellow servicemen and the members of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association for all the thoughts and prayers.

LEBANON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Linda Simmons VanHook are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 2 at the Immanuel Baptist Church with Pastor John Hunn, Rev. Mark Caruth & Bro. Carl Jones officiating.

Interment will follow at the Wilson County Memorial Gardens. Visitation Tuesday 12 Noon - 8 p.m. at Ligon & Bobo and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Mrs. VanHook, age 66 of  Lebanon, passed away Sunday, November 29, 2009, at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, surrounded by her family and friends.

Born December 11, 1942, in Wilson County, she was the daughter of the late Elsie Mai Huffines Simmons and Jesse J. Simmons of Lebanon.

She retired from Lifeway where she was an accounts payable clerk and was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Sue McGee and a granddaughter, Madelyn Reed Waddle.

She is survived by her husband of over 46 years, Paul H. VanHook; children Paul E. (Melissa) VanHook of Murfreesboro; Laura (Randy) Waddle and Brad H. (Millie) VanHook -- all of Lebanon; grandchildren Lainie VanHook, Amanda and Lily Beth Waddle, Arrington VanHook, Morgan, Maleah, Ethan and Erin Vanhook; father Jesse J. Simmons of Lebanon; sister Jessie (Homer) Hughes of Carrollton, GA; and brother Malcolm (Evelyn) Simmons of Lebanon.

Honorary pallbearers: Physicians and staff of SICU & CVICU at Vanderbilt University Medical Center

Active pallbearers: Donald Oakley, Jack Hale, Marvin Fisher, Wayne Beadle, Joe Dillard, and Charlie Bissinger.
