Wilson County Emergency Communications District has been given authority from the legislative bodies of Wilson County, Lebanon, Mt. Juliet and Watertown to issue all property numbers, or addresses, within their jurisdictions, effective today.

“This basically puts all the government entities under the same interlocal agreement. The cities and the county will remain for naming the streets. They have nothing to do with the numbering,” Wilson County 911 Director J.R. Kelly said.

The delegations provide the exclusive authority for 911 to establish, revise and implement its existing property numbering policy in the best interest of emergency services, throughout Wilson County, in a uniform manner acceptable to the United States Postal Service.

Kelley said that in the past, Lebanon has used different numbering schemes for streets and while they do not anticipate renumbering, they will issue new numbers.

“It will help in uniformity and will be better for emergency services. When the ambulance is going down the street, they will know what to expect,” he said of the delegation, which applies only to property numbering.
Kelley continued by encouraging property owners to post their number at their property.

“That is what we refer to when someone calls for an ambulance or police,” he said, adding that it is not required to have a building on the numbered property. “Now you can get a number for a vacant lot.”

In order to accomplish the objectives of this delegation of authority, Wilson County, Lebanon, Mt. Juliet and Watertown agree that no permits, services, utilities or urban development will be approved for any property within any area under their jurisdiction without a property number approved by 911 for the applicable property. Therefore, the general public is now required to contact 911 for the issuance of new property numbers or the correction of existing erroneous numbers.
