I try to keep my writing on the subject of birds, but sometimes there are other thoughts that invade my inner thinking process. If I don't tell this story, I might just bust.
When the good Lord gives us sour lemons, most of the time we just moan and groan. 13 years ago, my good friend, Anthony Gray, and Willey Taylor along with me decided to make lemonade instead. While everyone was complaining about the noise levels around their house, we took it into our own hands and headed out to the Cumberland River down Cairo Bend road. The first mistake was letting Willey drive us there in his old pickup truck.
I had one of those cricket boxes with the plastic inner lid where whatever was put in, would stay in. The cicadas were still coming up from under ground and with a heavy dew the night before, it was easy to fill the container up. I love top water fishing, so I took a medium size hook and hooked the cicada through the soft belly and tossed him out into the lake. He started buzzing and making a powerfull protest while floating on the surface of the water. BAM! There was a nice fish on and it didn't take too long before Anthony and myself had several nice keepers. Everything in the water was going crazy on our offerings. Willey was suffering through the day and had not caught anything, Nada!
After about 4 hours of catching every kind of fish you can possibably imagine, Anthony and myself were ready to go home. Nope, Willey made the statement that he was the driver and that we will stay untill he caught a fish. I don't know what he was doing wrong, but his fishing luck stunk. Finally there was a tug on his line, and he pulled in a carp, that weighed maybe 2 pounds at the most. Anthony Gray told me later that if Willey had not finally caught something, he was about to hijack the truck. Dotty Kim and myself were eating at the Ponderosa last Friday, when we ran into Anthony and his Mother. She asked about the formula for Hummingbird nectar. One part pure grain sugar to four parts hot water. NO FoodColor!!
I believe that free fishing day is coming up pretty soon and you should pack a lunch and take the children out for a fun day around the creeks, or lakes. Bait is very cheap as long as the cicada's keep buzzing!
