MT. JULIET -- Senior Austin Smith pitched six strong innings Monday night helping Mt. Juliet to a 3-2 win over visiting Murfreesboro Oakland in the 2014 season-opener.
A Columbia State signee, Smith scattered six hits and struck out five as the Golden Bears rallied from a 2-0 hole with a run in the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth.
Peyton Cole tripled in the fifth, then scored on a wild pitch.
Alex Houser got things started in the sixth with a two-out double. Curt Hoppe chased pinch runner Peyton Haynes home with a line single to center. Jackson Hollinghead drove in pinch runner Matt Massey with the game winner on another single to center.
Reliever Eli Schreiber worked a scoreless top of the seventh to earn the save.
Mt. Juliet will open play Wednesday evening Chattanooga's Scenic City Classic, playing NW Whitfield, GA at McCallie.
On Thursday, the Bears will play at Chattanooga Baylor followed by a Friday contest at Boyd Buchanan. Elimination play begins Saturday.
Siegel 22, Lebanon 0
MURFREESBORO -- Senior lefty Chandler Coley twirled a five-inning no-hitter Monday night as Siegel blasted Lebanon 22-0 in the 2014 season opener for both teams.
Coley walked two batters, hit one and struck out five Blue Devils.
The Stars pounded out 17 hits off LHS pitchers Connor Harris, Tristan Warden and Jake Millay.
Siegel scored two runs in the first, five in the second, nine in the third and tacked on six more in the fourth.
Cleanup hitter Nick Kristinus went four-for-four and drove in eight runs. He hit a two-run homer in the first, added a grand slam in the second, then bopped a two-run double in the third.
The Blue Devils will travel to Manchester Wednesday afternoon to play Coffee County in a 4 p.m. game.
Grand Slam Challenge
Lebanon is scheduled to participate this week in the Smyrna Grand Slam Challenge, playing Cannon County Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at LaVergne High.
On Friday, LHS will play Science Hill out of Johnson City in a 4:30 p.m. contest at Riverdale High.
Two games are slated for Saturday, a 1:30 p.m. matchup with Shelbyville Central and a 6:30 p.m. game with tournament host Smyrna.
Both Saturday games will be played at Smyrna High.
