Record vote colors Wilson red for President
Harris said there was a big push by voters early in the morning then the numbers tapered off and picked up again later. Polls were open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
She said she was not sure how many new voters registered for this election, but she noted a large of people did register this time.
The results are not surprising given Wilson’s turn toward the GOP in the past few years.With 82 percent of precincts reporting statewide, McCain won in Tennessee with 60.9 percent of the vote versus 37.7 percent for Obama.
In other races in Wilson County, U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, a Republican, trounced Democrat Bob Tuke, a Nashville attorney by a vote of 33,919 to 11,937.
Although U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, a Democrat, won his race for 5th Congressional District, he lost Wilson County. Cooper received 17,166 votes, but Republican challenger Gerard Donovan bested him with 19,536 votes. The 5th District includes part of Wilson, Davidson and part of Cheatham CountiesU.S. Rep. Bart Gordon, also a Democrat, won the 6th Congressional District race by a vote of 6,068 to challenger Chris Baker total of 2,325 in Wilson County. The 6th District is made up of 15 counties including part of Wilson.
