JACKSON, MS -- The Reverend William Robert Senter, III, retired Episcopal priest, 73, died Monday, February 9, 2009 at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.

A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 21 at the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Cathedral. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Terry and will resume at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Francis Hall at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Cathedral.

Fr. Senter was born on September 18, 1935 in Chattanooga, the son of the late William Robert Senter, Jr. & Virginia Mack Senter. He earned his B.S. from the University of the South in Sewanee and his B.D. and a MDiv from Colgate Rochester/Bexley Hall, with further studies in pasotoral theology & counseling at Vanderbilt University.

Fr. Senter began his ministry in June 1961 in Knoxville where he served as a Deacon and Priest Associate at St. James’ Episcopal Church. In January 1963, he moved to Bristol where he served as the Vicar of St. Columba’s Church.

Shortly after his arrival he married the former Linda Howard, of Lake Providence, LA and they began their family. In May 1968 he became the first full time Vicar of Epiphany Episcopal Church in Lebanon.

In January 1984, Fr. Senter became Rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Canton, MS. In April 1994 he became the Vicar of Combined Ministries of the Episcopal Churches in Terry, Crystal Springs and Hazelhurst and in 1996 served the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd and St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Forest.

He retired from the Diocese in 2000. He continued his ministry after retirement, serving Grace Church in Lake Providence, LA and St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Jackson, MS.

Fr. Senter’s ministry was centered on his love for Jesus Christ and Christ’s love for all of God’s people. He ministered with skill,compassion and effectiveness to people in crisis, in social or emotional difficulty and in pain. He had a gift of helping people when they needed help the most.

Fr. Senter enjoyed birding, music, & sports. He was an avid reader and hobbies included model trains and genealogy.

Survivors include: his wife Linda Howard Senter; children Lydia Elizabeth Senter, Matthew Mack (Lisa) Senter and grandson Jacob Ryan Senter. He is also survived by sisters - and brothers-in-law, Susan & David Holloway, Penny & Art Lassiter, Judy Howard, Sara Beth & Brian Howard and Diane & Robbie Howard, mother-in-law, Eloise A. Howard.

Other relatives include cousins, Sara Jo Hudson, Joe Wheeles, Charles Baker & Cathy B. Cirak. He was blessed with 20 nieces and nephews and 20 great nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law R. Keener Howard, brother-in-law Richard K. Howard, Jr., and niece Leigh Anne Holloway.
