CARTHAGE -- Retired U. S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Robert Kerr of the Rome Community died shortly after arrival at University Medical Center on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011 at University Medical Center where he was being treated after transport from Quality Care. He was 82.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7 at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home with Brother Steve Maile and Mr. Kerrs pastor Brother Donie Payne officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Smith County Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Sanderson in Carthage Wednesday after 9 a.m.
Masonic Chapel services were conducted Tuesday, Sept. 6 by Comer Masonic Lodge #417 F & AM of Watertown -- of which Mr. Kerr was a member. He was a 32nd Degree Mason.
Born Robert Quarles Kerr in the Stone Community of Jackson County on January 18, 1929, he was one of three children of the late Edward Glover Kerr and Ova Vella Scott Kerr.
A sister, Ione Kerr Harris preceded him in death.
On May 12, 1989 he was married to the former Nola Mae Savage of Rome.
They were preceded in death by her son, Mackie Wayne Manion in 1995.
After retiring from the US Air Force with 42 years military service and military reserve service, Mr. Kerr was employed at Avco-Textron for 22 years before retiring from there.
Mr. Kerr was a veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the Carthage Road Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters Debbie (James) Stephens and Bobbye Lou Hudson and friend Jeff Troupe -- all of Watertown; step-daughters Janie (Don) Jordan and husband Don of Gulf Shores AL, Lisa (Kent) Taylor of Riddleton; brother Nelson (Frances) Kerr of Livingston along with nine grandchildren.
