Smith bound over to grand jury
By KALYN SHELLYThe Wilson PostA hit-and-run case involving a driver who was allegedly drinking and impaired by marijuana at the time of the incident when his car struck two young females walking along Hill Street in Lebanon near dusk was bound over to the Wilson County grand jury yesterday. State prosecutors showed evidence in Judge Robert Hamilton's General Sessions Court Thursday that Carroll H. Smith Jr. had disclosed to Lebanon Police Officer Steve Green that he had consumed 13 beers and smoked 10 marijuana joints before the car he was driving struck Suanne Bone and Melanie Long, both of Lebanon. Green told the court that Smith had also said he was on his way to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting when the accident happened and that his vehicle was traveling at near 50 miles per hour. Smith did not testify at the hearing and is being held at the Wilson County Jail. Smith was charged on four criminal counts including two counts of vehicular assault, leaving the scene of an accident with injury, and driving under the influence. The two victims testified about their encounter on March 24. Bone recalled being hit from behind and "going on to the hood of the car (Smith's vehicle)" while walking on Hill Street. Long also testified but said she did not remember what occurred at the time of the accident and said her memory lapse did not recover until she awoke at the hospital sometime later. Both victims testified that they were not sure that they would ever fully recover from the incident. According to the police report filed regarding the incident, there was no evidence that there was an attempt to stop the green Camaro before it struck the two women. When police found the Camaro at Smith's then-fiancee's home at 314 Hill Street, the damage had been covered with a blanket. Police said the only damage to the car was a shattered windshield on the driver's side in which human hair but no blood was found. The grand jury is to hear the case in August.Staff Writer Kalyn Shelly may be contacted at email@example.com.
